QUICK LOOK: Week 13-2019 / New Releases

A great week regarding new score releases. Mainly because the bigger names will get a lot of attention from fans. But still, there are some other stuff that should not be overlooked

Let me take the easy ones first. Danny Elfman and his newest collaboration with Tim Burton is always one of the highlights of the year. And "Dumbo" do not dissapoint at all. Another lovely and enjoyable work, that goes closer to "Big Fish" than "Alice", but is full of really good moments.

Another highlight of the week is the new collaboration between maestro Thomas Newman and John Lee Hancock. Leaving behind his usual composer, Burwell, and returning to a more serious tone that the one both showed in "Saving Mr. Banks", "The Highwaymen" is a Netflix film that is full of old classic buddy cop movies vibes, that bring us a composer closer to his "Road to Perdition" sound. Which is not a bad thing.

One more return comes with brazilian composer Marcelo Zarvos, who returns to film after "Wonder" with the classic drama "The Chaperone". A style and sounds in which he usually moves with certain amount of quality. Although this time its music seems to fall a bit into topical territory.

The surprising one here is with a new Don Davis score, after his great success with "The Matrix" trilogy in 2003. Almost 15 years without doing much anything, returns with "Beyond the Sky". A B-movie about extraterretrial abductions that, at least, seems to bring back Davis to his great TV compositions from final 90's

Also Rolfe Kent finally publish his delicious score for the comedy biopic "Stan and Ollie". A really nice score, with some jazzy vibes that (again) shows the composer strenght at this kind of films. Lyrical music, also a lot of energy, that creates a ver interesting and enjoyable score.

Now I enter into more "unknown" territory. But one that fans need to know or, at least, check a bit. I promise you that there is music to enjoy among them. The music from the new Amazon Prime series "Hanna" could be the more challenging. The series are based on Joe Wright's film, whose electronic ambiental score was composed by The Chemical Brothers. Now are electronic experts Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury the ones in charge of this action thriller, following a similar direction.

For those that are more accustomed to a melodic approach, "Nepal" would probably be their cup of tea. Cyrille Aufort returns to documentary territory, without forgetting that touch of class and quality that always permeate his work. A real beauty to enjoy.

And finally, Olivier Cussac. A composer I really like, that I discovered thanks to my kids and the cartoon series "Les As de la Jungle". Now he presents his latest score for an animated film called "Terra-Willy: Planète Inconnue" that follows the frantic pace and fun of his previous work. So for those who love action and adventure in music of animated films, they are in for a treat with this one. Enjoy!
